
BIOGRAPHY
1952
Luís Soares was born on the 22nd August in Lourenço Marques (in Maputo), Mozambique. A descendant of colonists, from a very young age he experienced the white, black and Asian mixture characteristic of the Mozambique of the time. These cultural and aesthetic experiences deeply marked his artistic life.
1959
He travels for the first time to Europe, visiting Portugal and Spain (Seville).
1960
He returns to Mozambique via Gibraltar, Egypt, Red Sea, Mombasa, Zanzibar and Dar es Salaam.
1964
Self-taught, since very young he has dedicated himself to drawing, pastel, gouache and watercolour.
He had as a teacher at the Institute, the artist António Heleno, who infected and enthused him in his passion for drawing, obtaining siempre a high qualification mark.
1966
He returned to Portugal via Cabo, Moçamedes, Lobito, Luanda and Las Palmas. He settled in Lisbon as his country and brother and entered the Colégio Vasco da Gama in Sintra.
1967
He visits England, Scotland, Morocco and returns to Mozambique.


1968
He attends drawing courses at the School of Drawing and Painting of the Núcleo de Arte de Lourenço Marques and there he executes his first works in oil and sculpture.

1969
He was interviewed for the first time for a newspaper, "Noticias", from Lourenço Marques on the subject of "Existentialism".
He enters as a student in the Colegio Nuno Alvares in Tomar - Portugal. There he makes large allegorical panels and commemorative plaques to represent in the Festa dos Tabuleiros. He makes the medal and plaque and collaborates in the finalists' newspaper where his work is published for the first time. He decorates shop windows in Tomar.
1971
Return to Mozambique.
Started working as an apprentice Customs Broker Assistant and later as a Customs Broker Assistant. He studies at night.
1972

He makes his first sculptures and assemblies in plastic material, using waste from a plastics factory.







1976
He exhibits at Gallery 33 in Johannesburg - South Africa; Collective of Mozambican Artists in Algeria - Algeria; Television Tower of Mozambican Artists - Berlin - former GDR and participates in the Exhibition of the 1st Anniversary of Independence, Maputo, Mozambique.
He learns to make his first pieces in clay, in the wheel at the Matola Pottery, near Lorenço Marques.
He uses the then-abandoned Núcleo de Arte as a painting, sculpture and ceramics workshop with his colleague and friend José Lobo Fernandes.
He makes designs for tiles at a factory in Umbeluzi near Matola, Maputo.
He left the country and visited Nigeria, Zaire, Kenya, as well as Paris, making his first contacts in Museums, with original works by artists from all over the world. He visits London, Munich, Zurich and Paris again.
He is one of the founders and directors of COAPA (Organisational Centre of Plastic Artists and Artisans), born from the ashes of the now defunct Núcleo de Arte.
His daughter, Solange, was born in Swaziland, currently also a ceramist, artist, marketing and advertising.

1978

He participated in the 3rd Independence Exhibition - Maputo - Mozambique; Palácio Foz - Lisbon - Portugal and in the COAPA Exhibition at FACIM which he organized, where he presented a series of drawings "O Voto" as a form of protest against the way of voting collectively in football fields and without being secret, in the same exhibition, a large format work of his friend Malangatana Valente Ngwenya was mounted by his initiative, who at that time was detained and in re-education in northern Mozambique; At that time, he came to Portugal and Zurich where he was going to make an exhibition and did not return to his country for reasons of political persecution, alien to his positions and wishes.
He spent Christmas 1978 with his family in Lisbon, who in the meantime managed to leave Mozambique clandestinely, where he settled as a refugee.
Having requested a year before a scholarship, sponsored by colleagues António Bronze and Malangatana, also former scholarship holders, the same was granted at the time by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation for Engraving and taken at GRAVURA - Cooperative Society of Portuguese Engravers, with the technical guidance of João Hogan.

He makes tile panels at the Viúva Lamego Ceramics Factory, taking advantage of the experience already gained in Mozambique, creating ceramic panels with an African appearance for mass production.

He had his first contact with Portuguese ceramics, which he fell in love with.
He settled in Caldas da Rainha, thinking of opening a ceramics shop there, but decided to move to Cascais where he set up a painting and ceramics workshop.

1981
He moved to Cascais and opened a workshop, starting a research project to create a type of ceramics that identified with the area, thus generating his new roots. This ceramics is today well known. The pieces are engraved by him and finished, today he has already made school and his children and collaborators execute the pieces, leaving him free time to dedicate himself to painting and sculpture.
