CER00173 - Tile - 30×30 cm - 1994

The tile is an ancient art inherited from Muslim craftsmanship, it acclimatised well to the Iberian Peninsula, becoming, from the 15th century onwards, an essential object of decoration and wall covering.
Produced on a large scale in Seville and Valencia, where Portuguese merchants regularly went to buy it, it was later manufactured in Portugal.
After the 19th century, marked by the industrialisation of its manufacture and by the use of stereotyped and repetitive patterns, the tile was reborn as a decorative support through the recovery operated by contemporary art. Today it is once again a singular means of artistic experimentation and a valid alternative to more traditional supports.
As the author of this tile, I have given continuity to this millenary technique, in order to contribute to its renewal and updating.
